Safety Policy. To participate in this project, you will need to observe, handle and isolate living honey bees to test them for parasitism. Even sick bees may sting in self-defense. To avoid being stung, handle honey bees you find on sidewalks or under lights with great care when putting them in containers. Never approach a honey bee hive unless you are a trained beekeeper wearing appropriate protective gear.
Bee stings usually cause local reactions (pain, swelling, itching and redness). Swelling can sometimes be extensive. Bee stings can rarely cause systemic and allergic reactions that may be life threatening.
Symptoms of an allergic reaction include: swelling that is not in the general area of the sting site, especially in the throat, neck or tongue; rash or hives; stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting or diarrhea; dizziness or severe headache; shortness of breath or difficulty in swallowing; shock; drop in blood pressure; and unconsciousness. If you have any of these symptoms, seek emergency medical help immediately.
